New Book on Keiko Released: We Want to Return Keiko to the Ocean
September 2003

In her new book, We Want to Return Keiko to the Ocean: An Orca Who Made the Longest Journey in the World, author Sakae Fujiwara describes Keiko's life from the time of his being captured at the age of two in Icelandic waters up to his presently unrestrained life in Norwegian waters.

She tells the story of Keiko, focusing on the fact that Keiko is the first and only one orca in history who was rescued from the aquarium and reintroduced to his home waters, commenting why this unprecedented success was achieved by introducing the various activities carried out by school children and the Free Willy-Keiko Foundation.

Sakae Fujiwara (right), author of We Want to Return Keiko to the Ocean, allowed for a portion of her revenue from the book to go to the foundation.
This book was written based on the author's 8-year research work on Keiko and is the first book for school children in the elementary and middle schools in Japan. In it, she describes the real fact of the dolphinarium, which has been regarded as the educational facility, and the true meaning of the tricks marine animals are forced to do in the aquarium. She advises readers to think over what is the best relationship between the human beings and wild animals through Keiko's story.

At the back of the book you can find a "Mini-Encyclopedia on Orcas," which explains the ecology of orcas, and an article, "FWKF," which describes the work of the Free Willy-Keiko Foundation and offers information on how to assist its activities.
